Work to turn Red Lion Yard into boutique shop alley unveiled

First published in News

COLCHESTER’S Red Lion Yard has been relaunched after a £600,000 revamp as a Covent Garden-style boutique shopping alley.

A new restaurant and several stores are due to open along the route, which links the High Street and Lion Walk shopping centre.

It has been overhauled with distinctive new shopfronts, paving and lighting.

The Cinnamon Lounge, previously part of Red Lion Hotel, is to become the East Coast Diner by the end of next month, creating 20 jobs.

Michele McConnachie and Nina White will open the Maison White home decor and gifts store tomorrow.

The Fashion Editor clothes boutique will open later.

A bespoke jeweller and a nail bar have also signed leases, and there is interest from a second restaurant and several further small businesses for the remaining lets.

The revamp was unveiled yesterday with a Chinese lion parade, performances by Theatretrain stage school and a preview of an exhibition about the 500-year-old hotel.

Refurbishment has also helped reveal many of the original features, brickwork and wooden beams at the hotel and yard.

This weekend there will be family entertainment, including free children’s activities, live music and face painting.

For more, including interviews with the new Red Lion Yard businesses, see Friday's Gazette.

Genuinely agree with you OG, brilliant. But hold on a mow! Did I hear the Red Lion is pre-victorian water tower? If so, surely there should be no commercial input, it must be restored as was and more. I know the asset management company concerned, they, or another AMC could do the same for Jumbo and the adjacent area but then the our mp would block that. Ps - this is a question for Councillor Rodney Bass - where was the first street light in Colchester? And why was it commissioned?

Very impressed, Lion yard was beginning to look dull and tired in recent times. Except for "Proctors" serving specialty fresh meats, I sometimes would give it a miss altogether.
Exciting to know there will NOW be a fresh look, and new shops setting up. Just love the distinctive new paving and lighting.
So the cinnamon lounge is to become the new East Coast Diner They have always served great food at reasonable prices, its just the stairs to the restaurant that is a put-off, especially to us oldies.
Colchester's Unique shopping centre with our fine balance of traffic free central core shopping, and our bustling high street is already a great attraction to locals and visitors alike, so our new Red Lion yard can only be another feather in our cap.

25414nora, I'm not sure if you're a tad confused? the Cinnamon Lounge is ground floor, used to be a coffee\snack shop & there's only one step into it. Hope this clears things up for you & you weren't confusing it with the hotel restaurant ?

One of Colchester's long-neglected assets is now looking really good and inviting. Congratulations to the new management at Lion Walk!
(Don't forget to mention the Richard III connection...)

I haven't seen it yet as I am not around the area at the moment but it looks good. How about sprucing up the rest of the town to encourage more decent shops instead of coffee places, barbers and cheap shops. Give us a reason to go into the town to shop. Personally I have not been in the town for about 2-3 months and then that was only to pick up an online order I made to M&S. We'll done to the revamp anyway as it is a good start to bringing real potential back to the town.
