The 22-year-old victim was walking along Balkerne Hill in Colchester at 3.30am when the attack happened.

He was near the Hole in the Wall pub when he was pushed to the ground and threatened.

The victim managed to get to his feet and ran home.

I'm going to do my best to arrange a meaningful demonstration aimed at have the street lights turned back on in Colchester - at least till this terrible violence stops. It will be in about 10 days. More detail later. Please text the word "lights" to 07850489219 if you might have an hour from 11.30 pm for no more than an hour. I have contacted the Look East news desk to ask for a camera and reporter. The idea is to demonstrate the sinister change at the point the lights go out.

Seriously Colchester police have lost any control whatsoever in Colchester. They should be ashamed of what people are evidently getting away with, brutal murders, stabbings, knife attacks all over the place. They need to get a grip and stop being so concerned with christmas shoplifting and more concerned whether people can go about their day in safety.

Definitely agree that the police are losing a grip in this town.

Even before, the recent horrific murder of the university student and the latest spate of nasty knife incidents, you had the PCC and police leaders saying violent crime is up by 70%!

The police are clearly too stretched / don't have enough resource and yet there is a PCC costing circa 100k, and as others have mentioned resource seems to be have been historically targeted at shoplifters etc and not more major crime.

Like so much in Colchester, it's infrastructure (including policing) seems woefully inadequate given the rapid population growth that has occurred here.

It is the largest policing area in Essex but I bet it does not have the largest budget / number of officers in the county. It should have especially when you consider it is also one of the more deprived areas as well........

They just don't have the resources to deal with what has become such a large town… The local officer at Colchester ie the uniform Bobby, are currently investigating over 30 jobs each not including the daily influx of incidents,, continuation enquiries . They are running around chasing their tales for every other agency who can't be bothered and leave it at the feet of the Police… How many uniformed officers do you think are on duty in Colchester in an 8 hour shift period… not what you think …... try 10. To cover every incident, every prisoner ,every petty complaint, and then try and deal with the more serious incident…if you wonder where most are, go to Colchester hospital where you will find an average of 6 baby sitting the needy and mental health, because no one else will… And don't blame the Police for investigation methods ask your local MP why the National Crime Recording System and the PCC , is such a ball and chain insisting all ,yes, all crime is investigated..On average 1500 incidents reported to Essex Police every day.. For an additional £5 per year, which was blocked by central government, you could have a lot more police officers. But you don't , you pay a lot lot less.. If you pay peanuts for something you will get a peanut service… Work out the cost of your sky tv every year or your alcohol consumption , take just 0.01% of that. thats your contribution to Policing Essex

If £80 is 0.01% of the sky tv cost (£294) and my alcohol consumption I have a serious drink problem at £799,706 per year!! The reason we have a small police presence is third of them are already retired early, these older 50-65 year olds could surely do all the paperwork we are constantly told about.
