More travellers set up camp by stadium

Essex County Standard: More travellers set up camp by stadium More travellers set up camp by stadium

MORE travellers have pitched up illegally on land near Colchester United’s stadium – complaining councils haven’t provided enough sites for them.

Eight caravans arrived on a field behind the U’s Astro-turf pitches yesterday lunchtime.

The club alerted Essex Police and Colchester Council amid fears the travellers will be on the land when its open day takes place on Sunday, July 20.

The travellers told the Gazette they numbered about 30 and had come from Surrey.

They said they did not know how long theywere going to stay and bemoaned the lack of official traveller sites in Essex.

They arrived less than 48 hours after an unconnected group of travellers pitched up on another section of land to the east of the stadium.

Legal proceedings have already been started by the council to clear the first traveller site, but it can take up to seven days.

A Colchester United spokesman said: “We are working with the relevant authorities to find a resolution.

“The area they are on is utilised at times, including what will be a very busy club open day.”

Martin Goss, borough councillor for Mile End, said: “Using the same old lame excuse there is nowhere to go simply doesn’t wash.

“It’s just a poor excuse to illegally camp, leave behind piles of unwanted rubbish and expect taxpayers to pay to clear it all up. Travellers’ sites have been provided at huge cost to the taxpayer, so they should use them.”

Essex Police were called at 12.30pm and sent officers, who took details of the vehicles.

A spokesman said: “They have spoken to the travellers, who claimed all the sites in Essex are full.

“We are liaising with them to try to get them to move to an area of waste land.”

The land is owed by Colchester Council and rented by the football club. A council spokesman said the authority hopes the travellers who arrived yesterday can be considered under the same proceedings it has already started to evict the caravans that arrived on Sunday.

The Direction to Leave Notice will be served today and will give the travellers 24 hours to leave.

If the travellers have not left by tomorrow, the council’s legal team will pursue a court

I would like to think so, yes. If I had land more of my own land to spare, I would accept them for a few days provided they were clean, tidy and respectful. If they were untidy, noisy etc then that would be a different matter. Would you not accept them on your land? I'm presuming you don't have any.

Boris, perhaps you have not had them park near where you live. When they arrived on the Hilly Fields it was really quite frightening. They had quad bikes roaming the footpaths at speed. They kicked the dog of a seventy year old lady. We would find them look at statues in our garden. The police would not attend because, as one officer told me, traveller are an ethnic minority and the police are scared of being accused of prejudice. They don't want to pay council tax but moan because they have nowhere legal to live. So instead of being an adult about it, they park and live illegally on private land, pay no council tax, still moan they gave nowhere to live, but expect to use all of the facilities and utilities that we pay for! I saw some the other day on the field opposite St Helena school, I wonder if the police moved them on and that's how far they went? Finally: if there's no room in the parks, move on!!

OK Colonel, you claim to speak for the silent majority, maybe along with Angry and one or two others, but the thumbs seem to be against you.
.
Travellers on official sites all pay council tax as a condition of being on those sites. Obviously, if they are forced to stop on unauthorised sites, and be moved on every few days, they are not going to pay council tax, any more than you would if you were in their position. So let's have no more of this nonsense about them failing to pay their council tax.

Mostly I disagree with Mary, but I salute her for pointing out how ridiculous your comments are. There is certainly no need to indulge in childish antics.

Where Russell us concerned, what else can I do? The local newspapers protect bob by not subjecting him to incisive journalism. I do vote for a major political party - they don't mess up the countries finances, and they are not afraid to bring in unpopular but necessary policies. I won't join the party because I don't trust myself not to become a "party first" no matter what. member. Winnie had the strength to betray his party twice for his beliefs. Was going on to say the only good thing they did was to pour a pot of urine over Russell.[/p]
Oh dear, Angry, you had to add in your little rant about Bob Russell, didn't you? Didn't you read what Mary Poppins said about your boring obsession with our MP? Mostly I disagree with Mary, but I salute her for pointing out how ridiculous your comments are. As I said to you on another thread, it's fine to express displeasure with the MP, but it makes more sense if you join a party that is putting up a candidate against him, or indeed stand against him yourself. There is certainly no need to indulge in childish antics.[/p]
Good afternoon Boris, yes I guess my rants are boring to some. Please read my response to Mary. I hope you may then understand why I am passionate about reducing knife crime. Where Russell us concerned, what else can I do? The local newspapers protect bob by not subjecting him to incisive journalism. Have you considered that a significant number of Colchestrians have no other means of receiving local news other than by the biased offerings of the gaz and cs? I do vote for a major political party - they don't mess up the countries finances, and they are not afraid to bring in unpopular but necessary policies. I won't join the party because I don't trust myself not to become a "party first" no matter what. member. Winnie had the strength to betray his party twice for his beliefs. You've learned from Dale Farm? Clearly not, Dale Farm was land belonging to the travellers, they were NOT camped on someone else's land, so having been evicted off their OWN land where would you expect them to go?

What would you do if you were turfed out of your house? Where would you go? To someone else's place perhaps? Did you really think that if they were moved of their own land they would just disappear? Try sticking to football if thats where your knowledge base lays, it certainly does not lay in the sphere of social policy.

Boris, I'm dyslexic and it's a real sod. Once I've made a mistake, eg left a word out, I don't see it no matter how many times I read it. When I was at school a hundred years ago. We would read out loud a page each from a classic. I enjoyed reading but couldn't understand why the teacher would start hitting me with her weapon of choice - two one foot wooden rulers taped together. She used to hit us with the edge! OK, so would you be saying that if they were on your land?
I would like to think so, yes. If I had land more of my own land to spare, I would accept them for a few days provided they were clean, tidy and respectful. If they were untidy, noisy etc then that would be a different matter. Would you not accept them on your land? I'm presuming you don't have any.
But if they were untidy, noisy etc. you wouldn't be able to get them off your land very easily. You'd probably end up getting a costly court order and have to pay for all the rubbish removal. You'd accept them for a few days, though? How very naive.
