COLCHESTER’S Weston Homes Community Stadium is set to become one of the foremost music venues in the East of England, Sir Elton John’s promoters say.

The Rocket Man put just under 17,000 bums on seats at the A12 stadium on Sunday but promoters Marshall Arts are confident where Sir Elton has gone, others will follow.

The crowd pleaser was the first act to play at St Mary’s, in Southampton, the Madejski Stadium, in Reading, Swansea’s Liberty Stadium and The Caledonian Stadium, home of the Scottish Premiership’s Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Each stadium has gone on to host numerous other artists, such as Bon Jovi, Pink, Rod Stewart and the Kings of Leon.

So, will Colchester be next?

Ben Martin, who co-ordinated Sir Elton’s show for Marshall PR, said: “I think the Weston Homes could become a key venue in the East of England - right up there with Portman Road and Carrow Road.

“I think you’ll find that where Elton goes, others follow.”
