A hospital nurse who admitted failing to properly assess a university student who died from head injuries has been deemed to fit to continue working.

Doreen Castleton was nurse-in-charge of the accident and emergency department at Colchester General Hospital when ambulance crews brought in Timothy Jarvis, 18.

The student, who had fallen down a flight of stairs at the University of Essex’s Wivenhoe campus, later died from severe head injuries.

Mrs Castleton admitted failing to ensure the patient was prioritised and adequately assessed when he was admitted to hospital in the early hours of October 12, 2011.

But two other charges against the nurse were not proven by a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) panel because of inconsistent evidence given by a colleague.
