Martin Hunt set to take over from Anne Turrell as leader of Colchester Council

Essex County Standard: Martin Hunt set to take over from Anne Turrell as leader of Colchester Council Martin Hunt set to take over from Anne Turrell as leader of Colchester Council

A NEW “caretaker” leader is to take over the running of Colchester Council.

At next month’s full council meeting, veteran Lib Dem Martin Hunt is expected to replace Anne Turrell, who is stepping back after six years at the helm.

Mr Hunt, who has been deputy council leader since the Lib Dem, Labour and independent coalition took power in 2008, was elected nominee as council leader at a meeting on Saturday.

He also replaces Nick Barlow as Lib Dem group leader, who stood down after a year in the role.

Why shouldn't he change his mind? He's only going to be it for a year. Why should he have to say any more? Maybe the Lib Dems have other plans for the medium term Maybe they are hoping he will change his mind about standing down as councillor. They will tell us, in the fullness of time, if they are so minded.

Thank you for your insightful but comment, calling others views "ignorant" and "pointless" as without the courage as you say "without your real name" is totally laughable, if not a tad pathetic. As a Lib Dem supporter I am entitled to my views, and to make comment, equally you are entitled to either accept or disregard them as is your choice. However you do not have the right to abuse from the position of anonymity that you then criticise in others. Shuffle back under your stone and have a nice day.

Thanks all for your comments - gosh there's a lot of personal bile flying about. So I'm looking for a Liberal Democrat supporter who knew me professionally for many years and claims I was known as Mike. Then whoever you are you are likely to be a journalist as it's the only profession I've ever had. And by the way the only people who rang me up in the middle of the night and asked me if I was Mike Hunt used to giggle a lot in a drunken teeenage way, hang up and then presumably move on to the next M Hunt in the phone book. Catchedicam must have a similarly mature outlook on life. That's of course of this is my real name and I'm not just pretending to be me.

Indeed, Mike, you may not be real one, but just in case you are then I hope that I am wrong about your elevation, time will tell. It is clear that you have many supporters on here, but then again so does David Cameron and what an odious individual he is, I don't like you on a political level, although on a personal level you are an affable enough chap. That is my opinion and I am entitled to it, but as a political figure, in public view then you set yourself up for that kind of comment, and should not be surprised that some of us do not hold you in the esteem you hold yourself.

You demonstrate a level of immaturity in descending to the level of 'name calling' and personally pejorative remarks that this site is famed for. Is this the kind of behaviour what we seek in a leader of the council? You really should rise above such pettiness, and simply act with a tad more decorum.

So, first you gave an opinion, when challenged you resorted to name calling (ignorant isn't a name, it's a description of your behaviour directly) and then you continue belligerently, dropping hints that you personally know Councillor Hunt but when asked won't reveal your name or any examples of knowing Councillor Hunt, thus making yourself look even more stupid. For someone who claims to dislike Councillor Hunt so much, you're doing a good job of attacking him in a ridiculously childish manner and allowing him to make himself even more likeable with his well mannered response. So again for the cheap seats, put your money where your mouth is. Otherwise you're just being insulting, ignorant and pointless. You can infer where or how you know Councillor Hunt without revealing your name. So do go on...or do you fear that your opinion won't stand up to intelligent, adult discussion? Incidentally, I haven't heard something as tragically pathetic as 'crawl under a rock' etc since I was about 15, so thank you so much for such an amusing blast of playground nostalgia. I would not worry to much about Mr Hicks, I think he is the Ginger Nut that moved from Cromwell Road to Highwoods, drives about in a 6 plate blue Suzuki. If it is i never thought one had the brain cell to write such comical pieces
In the words of King George the 6th Martin, No one kicks a dead dog:
Something a little puzzling I think you were the Mr Hunt former Editor of the gazette, or I am sure there was a chap there with that name. Funny really if it is the case we have had Hunt-McNeil and now Channon, sounds like a 70's throw back first division football team.
If you are the Mr Hunt that ran the gazette chip paper I must admit it was the beginning of the slippery slope of lackadaisical journalism that Colchester has been accustomed to enjoy. (Hence the reason why there is such much talk of sticky fingers and brown envelopes in the borough).
If you are not the said, then do accept my apologies during bouts of aged senile dementia.
Do enjoy your new post sitting at the table, with Telly Teflon & The Non Sticks I am sure it will be an enlightening time. My honourable congratulations, to you.
