Eight weeks on from the murder of a man in Colchester, detectives have renewed their appeal to find a cyclist in Castle Park.

Officers believe the man seen in the CCTV image was riding his bike through the park just before 1pm, as the clock on the image is an hour fast.

Mr Attfield was found seriously injured with over 100 stab wounds in Castle Park off Guildford Road shortly before 6am on Saturday, March 29.

He died a short time later at the scene.

The 33-year-old man from East Bay in the town was last seen in the River Lodge Public House on Middleborough on Friday, March 28.

He left there shortly after 10pm and police are continuing to piece together his last movements from witness accounts.

Essex County Standard:

The man shown above has yet to come forward despite his picture being shown on television, online and in print.

Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Simon Werrett, said: "Although the image is slightly distorted because of the lack of light and shadows, we hope that this cyclist will recall being in the park near the lake by looking at their image and the time-stamp on it. We urge to them to contact us so that we can talk to them and find out what they were doing in the park and then hopefully dismiss them from the enquiry. We want to move on and concentrate fully on potential suspects.”

In total, seven people require possible elimination from the murder investigation.

To help jog memories, police are releasing images of the last day’s movements of James Attfield as he walked through the town centre.

A Crimestoppers reward of up to £5,000 still remains on offer for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A man and a woman, both aged 27 and from Colchester, are currently on police bail until Wednesday, July 9 after having been arrested in connection with the murder.

How will the police to get proper responses from witnesses if there are discrepancies between the CCTV still, which clearly confirms the photo was taken at night (in the dark) against the report that says he rode through the park at around 1.00pm (in the afternoon)

I will spell it out. Its pretty basic for anybody who can tell the time!

"Officers believe the man seen in the CCTV image was riding his bike through the park just before 1pm, as the clock on the image is an hour fast".

The time stamp on the CCTV clearly says 01:56 (which, when I learnt to tell the time was AM, i.e. the early hours of the morning). And yes the report does say the time stamp is 1 hour fast which makes the actual time of the CCTV picture to have been taken at 00:56, also in the early hours of the morning (AM) of 29th March, just before 1:00AM so its clearly is not in the afternoon (PM).

My original comment about discrepancies in reporting times still stands and also I can't see where your comment about 24 hours comes into it because there are only 12 hours between 1:00AM and 1:00PM.

To be honest, I think if I did not live 5 minutes away from the murder happened I would not know that a murder had even taken place. I don't regularly watch Crimewatch or watch a lot of TV in general, and before this I did not visit Colchester Gazette at all. I really think the police have not done a good job in canvassing the area, especially around the possible entrances/exits to the crime scene. There needs to be giant posters asking for help on the path leading to Leisure World, the path from Castle Park leading to the Riverside estate and numerous posters in the Castle Park. This was a violent murder that to my mind has to be the work of a very dangerous person with serious mental problems. Until this person is caught, everyone must be vigilant.

Essex Police appear to have made a few arrests but on the face of it don't seem to be making any real progress in finding the perpetrator of this crime.
The man and woman from Colchester aged 27 mentioned in the report keep getting arrested and bailed on a regular basis- now again until 9th July.Would Essex Police care to inform the public as what offence or offences these ongoing arrests relate to because unless they can justify withholding the reason for the arrests this is surely a matter in which the public are entitled to information given that this horrific crime was committed many weeks ago ?
