Students are not fulfilling their potential at Colchester Institute, inspectors have ruled.
The college, which has its main campus in Sheepen Road, Colchester, has been told it requires improvement in an Ofsted report, published on Friday.
The quality of teaching in hospitality and catering was rated as good, but in seven other subjects - including engineering, English, maths and performing arts, the college was deemed to need improvement.
Its overall rating is worse than the college’s previous inspection in 2011, when it was rated good.
Principal Alison Andreas said: “Obviously we are disappointed, but we were absolutely aware there were areas where improvement was needed and we are quite a way down the road in addressing that, which Ofsted acknowledge."
