FOUR people had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in a lift at Colchester Castle - just 24 hours after it was officially reopened.

The fire brigade was called out at 3.20pm today after reports that people were trapped.

Many crews are currently taking part in a 12-hour strike, but working firefighters went to the rescue.

The victims were released unhurt by 3.45pm.

The historic castle - Europe’s largest surviving Norman keep - only reopened to the public yesterday after a massive £4.2million revamp lasting 14 months.

It was officially opened by mayor Colin Sykes.
