Silk Road licensing review - Bar ordered to carry out tough measures

First published in News

COLCHESTER’S Silk Road bar has been ordered to close for three months while tough new licensing restrictions are put in place.

However, the closure does not come into force for 21 days and because owner Osman Rasih will appeal against the decision, it will remain open.

Colchester Council’s licensing committee reviewed the licence after a request from Essex Police and decided the bar contributes to antisocial behaviour.

Mr Rasih said: “The fact they want to remove me personally is the biggest shock.

“Anyone who comes into Silk Road knows how professional my staff are.

“But I understand where the police are coming from in ensuring the safety of people on a night out.

“I realise things need to be looked at in the town, but I feel they’ve have been knocking on the wrong door.”

Read the full story and see the full list of licensing restrictions in today's Gazette.

I doubt very much Angryman that you have been to this bar. We all have opinions, but telling someone to p*** off is somewhat childish don't you think?
I am sure that if Mr Rasih would invite all you armchair critics to his seedy joint, then you have every right to either slate or praise the venue and its staff.
I have nothing but praise for them, & before you say anything!! No i do not take drugs or fight in the streets, I have been in this venue on various occasions over the past 4 years, both social and work related and witnessed people drinking and having a good time, & yes seen the odd fight just like other places in town, no different to any other i have been to, except This bar has a stigma that seems to have stayed and the doubters love that.
Everyone deserves to prove themselves and I for one can say that The Silk Road is far cleaner and better run since its relaunch last September, better than a large amount of the others in the town.
I dare you to stand outside Liquid at closing time I can guarantee you that there will be noise & violence , just ask the cab drivers on the ranks?
But wait a minute, the crowd will continue round to Queen street and of course that is then Silk Road's responsibility!!!!
I have witnessed running battles in Crouch street, Head street , High street & Queen Street, why are the other clubs not being punished??
I am involved in picking up the pieces & have witnessed far more than most that seem to voice there opinion here, The reason maybe is that the other clubs are owned by big chains and silk road is only a small independent, easy pickings for the committee in my opinion.

hmmmm.......
Inviting film crews into your club and having aggressive doorman filmed didn't really help his cause did it...
The Police and Council aren't going be as stupid as to expect this gentleman to be responsible for everything that goes on down Queen Street. So there must be actual evidence of things happening within or resulting because of Silk Road for them to enforce this. Anybody with a personal licence (myself included) will know how the premises licence works and what you have to do to stay within its rules. Their not going to enforce a closure for a few fights, or there would be no pubs or clubs open anywhere!... I personally think there is more to this than is being let on. But then again if it was me, id sort my business out and concentrate on making it a better and safer place for my staff and customers rather than posing for photos and selling a sob story whilst trying to move the blame onto someone else in the local paper...

basically what the owner tried to with the TV show, was operate an all publicity is good publicity attitude, it backfired in his face. they did not get what they wanted or what they think they wanted, they got what the TV company wanted. as for Doorman62 above i presume that you are one of the doorman there born in 62? what a sorry state that the security was portrayed if that is the way they provide protection and safety. the card is marked, silk road can appeal, swing it out a little longer, get the three months suspension and training, reopen, but they will be watching you like a hawk. same thing happened at the tarten house it was the beginning of the end. small is beautiful, you should not have expanded, now you want to recoup your money and you thought you could do it with free publicity. well I am afraid you have crossed swords with the big boys in the town now and they dont take these things very lightly, no matter how tough your bouncers think they are.

If it wasn't for the scum that went to Queen St there wouldn't be any problems. There is a reason why Head St and High St are in comparison much better at night because it's where normal people go. Take it from someone that regularly frequents town (for some reason) at night.

Paddy16 you come across to me as a man of reason who obviously is making comments on facts that you have seen good on you sir, purpleorange you are obviously a manager or owner of another venue i feel that you are upset at the competition that silk road is actually posing you maybe you need to be the one replaced as you seem to be struggling to run a viable establishment, jealousy is a terrible thing and eventually will eat you up, thebrotherhoodoftheb
ell not to sure what to make of you but you come across as someone who thinks he is one of the so called big boys yet you seem to be threatened by the doorstaff of silk road for some unknown reason i know most of them and yes they can handle any issues they are professionals most of whom which work the security at the main colchester hospital that we all at sometime unfortunately visit, maybe you need to look closer at what you are actually saying,im sure mr rasih has no problems with being watched closely i know him better than most and know for a fact he has nothing to hide, again someone who obviously feels threatened by the competition,bell103 i feel you have no idea what you are talking about you say the high street and head street are lot safer place to be well maybe you need to look at statistics and then review your comment.

Silk road is no competition.. it's a completely different clientelle and I'm not based in town. So it's my opinion, not my jealousy... Perhaps you should get some facts before you start spouting nonsence.. who said anything about my business failing? I'm not the one under a 3 month ban...
