A MUM’S kitchen has been voted the worst in Britain.

Jeanette Angel’s wreck of a room is now in line for a £3,000 overhaul after she saw off competition for the unflattering accolade from more than 100 other entries.

It was her generosity in foregoing her own wedding, to pay for her baby niece’s funeral, which stole the hearts of the public and the judging panel.

Jeanette, 33, moved with her children and partner to her home in New Town, Colchester, last December.

Since then, they have had to make do without heating, hot water or even a kitchen sink.

Her sister, Louise, 29, from Bradwell, heard a “Britain’s worst kitchen” competition was offering a £3,000 makeover and put Jeanette forward for the prize.

An online poll was run on the mybuilder.com website and Jeanette’s entry received nearly 3,000 votes.

The top 12 went forward to the finals of the competition, with final judging based on the state of the entrants’ kitchens and the stories behind them.

Louise was pregnant and nearly full-term when she went into labour a couple of weeks early in February.

She underwent an emergency Caesarian, but baby Beatrix did not survive.

Louise only just pulled through herself, after losing 4.5 litres of blood.

Instead of having a big wedding bash, Jeanette and partner Anthony now plan a low-key wedding in June, as they spent the money on Beatrix’s funeral.

Jeanette, whose son Aiden, eight, suffers from ADHD and obsessive compulsive disorder, said: “I’m so humbled and proud people have voted for me.

“Aiden can’t deal with the mess like the rest of us.

“He’s massively sensory and panics over food and how I make it. I’ve had to invent rituals to keep him calm and it can take hours before we sit down and eat.”

Ryan Notz, founder of MyBuilder.com, said Jeanette’s entry stood out because of the life-changing effect a new kitchen would have on the whole family.

He added: “In the end we chose Jeanette not just because she had so much public support, but because we felt it was a chance to support a family managing a significant problem in their lives.

“They’ve struggled for a long time and by helping them straighten out their kitchen, we can help them to manage Aiden’s condition.”

The kitchen is being donated by supplier Benchmarx and installed by MyBuilder.com.

It is hoped it will be ready before the summer holidays.
