Essex County Standard: Support gathers for street light switch-off u-turn Support gathers for street light switch-off u-turn

A TRADE union has called on Essex County Council to reverse its decision to turn off street-lights.

The authority decided last year to switch off seven out of ten lights in Colchester between 12am and 5am in a bid to save £132,000 a year.

GMB launched a campaign at the beginning of the month urging a re-think and it is pleased with the response.

Michelle Bacon, GMB regional officer, said: “GMB is pleased that so far we received an overwhelming response to the campaign.

“We accept that some villages do not want street lighting during the hours of darkness, however, in larger towns this is of extreme concern.

“There is a duty of care under the Crime and Disorder Act for local councils to address such activity in conjunction with partners - it is not the sole responsibility of the police.

“We are not convinced that switching off the lights tackles the fear of crime which councils are obliged to do.

“It allows opportunists to prey on our elderly and most vulnerable.”

Mrs Bacon also urged Essex County Council to follow the lead set out by Kent County Council, which has promised to review its street light switch-off.

We could save the £132,000 per year by sacking the idiot that made the decision to turn the street lights off in the first place.

What I find so stupid is that the lights are turned back on at 5am when it is light !

Turn the lights off!! It doesn't make the world an unsafe place to have them off - criminals prefer the day as they like EMPTY houses when people are out at work.

That's £132,000 of our money which can be better spent. It's now an austerity country we need to no longer waste money.

Stop paying a proportioned amount of your council tax in those areas effected and I am sure they will start to sit up and take notice.

I recently had to walk home from Colchester Hospital after midnight when a member of my family was allowed home following treatment at A & E which we attended around 5pm . The furthest thing from my mind was taking a torch with us. A local road and area for us both was such a concern due to state of pavements, hearing someone walking behind us at times was so frightening. Ambulance service, CGH and local council have all backed the lights to be turned back on...still nothing. In balance to money saving there are other issues where large amounts of public cash is wasted in such a casual fashion by ECC that this saving is minuscule in comparison .

I would just like to correct Mrs Bacon's assumption that the KCC are reviewing Kent's switch off, this is incorrect.

I have been petitioning the KCC to switch my road's streetlights back on in Gravesend, Kent in light of crime taking place after switch off and quoted David Brazier comments in the Kent Messenger that KCC would review switch off in areas of concern about increased crime and was informed "David Brazier's comments in local media were an acknowledgment that mistakes will have been made in implementing a project of this size and reflected we are willing to re look at locations to ensure that the agreed exclusion criteria had been applied correctly at the time. So Gravesend remains in the dark, and so will Essex unless you are in an exclusion criteria zone we have all been hoodwinked into thinking they would revise their decision, appears not!!
