Firstsite chairman announces retirement

Essex County Standard: Firstsite chairman announces retirement Firstsite chairman announces retirement

THE chairman of Colchester’s Firstsite is to retire after seven years.

Chris Paveley was chair of trustees in a period which saw the organisation make the prolonged move from the Minories into a new £28 million building, also called Firstsite.

He said with director Matthew Rowe now firmly in place after nearly 18 months in charge, it was time for an injection of fresh blood.

He said: “My time at Firstsite has been quite a journey, tremendously exciting, enjoyable and finally fulfilling.”

Mr Paveley gave notice of his retirement last October. Trustee Chris Hunt is interim chair while recruitment for a permanent replacement continues.

- Well, he wasn't really likely to state that it was a lot of money wasted and that the local taxpayers have been poorly served now, was he? After all, that would reflect poorly on his chairmanship.

So what has he achieved in the last Seven years? On the face of it absolutely nothing!

However, let's look at the positives. His tireless efforts, along with the so called 'Art Elite' to continue to promote the VAF, against a barrage of justified objections does show he was good at ignoring the truth about the Golden Banana.

All we can hope for is that the next Chairman does not wear the same rose coloured spectacles as Chris Paveley had on and they see the VAF as it really is. Whoever it is must actively work towards making it viable, profitable and a successful venture so the council taxpayers of Colchester, who are the ones who have endured years of disastrous decisions, can reap the benefits.

I have been following this chap for some time since last July quite an interesting mixed bag here, maybe Editor Channon of the gazette might bee keen to ask a few questions.
He runs a company called Jacobite Ltd public relations communications activities etc
He resigned last year and in an instant took over a post at North Essex Partnership Foundation Trust NHS Mental health services.
The Jacobite Ltd web site has been under construction for over 8 months.
Who is the named Sarah Kellet on the email, that by the way which does not work, with status return notification failure warnings.
The mobile number on the Jacobite Site and the BT Landline telephone number do not work, is this the same person or is this someone else?
the plot thickens. 01206 768419 or 07740917997 or sarahkellet@jacobite
ltd.com
North Essex Trust has been under investigation by the Quality Care Commission for some months now with issues at a unit at Clacton
(If you read his Linked In Site, he had some associations with Local Business Enterprise Agencies in the area. Now the particular associated Quango in St Peters St was closed some time ago and there were issues there with 3 members of staff who were giving out public monies and funds to claimants that were not entitled to receive those allowances and funding).
Are these Chair positions being payed in salary on a self employed consultancy basis, or are they part of a P.A.Y.E. employment scheme based with each Trust and Quango?
May be all the Sleuth's and Sherlock's on this thread site would like to come on board and offer some comment or opinion, there has been certainly a lot of conjecture and opinion about First site.

In the seven years I have never seen him outside the VAF or at public Colchester Council meetings. But why should he meet the local residents when Firstsite funding is guaranteed for years to come.
.
Just read the latest Conservative party promotion leaflet where the cultural scene is completely ignored. Not one mention of the VAF.

Not surprising since the Conservatives were the ones who wanted that design of the VAF, in that place. And, conveniently, they are now led by a councillor who wasn't in Colchester at the time, so he can claim innocence.

It is shameful when our council representatives refuse to discuss the VAF at council meetings. Even worse Colchester Council ignores the requirements of Firstsite charitable objects and the VAF lease terms that all activities must be art related especially visual arts. So financial seminars for the rich organised by a local solicitor practice and church meetings such as Jehovah witnesses and so called "Christian scientists" are not permissible. Even if they earned money for Firstsite it would be tiny compared to the huge subsidies. However the people coming all add to the quoted visitors to the VAF.
.
Hopefully the new government cultural minister will clamp down on the misuse of public money by the Arts Council. Colchester Council will have to face reality that the VAF has only earned international recognition as the £28million toilet. That was covered recently in the local Gazette and was syndicated/copied to about forty countries.
.
The VAF and surrounding land could be a money earner if a commercial exhibition company was given a free hand. But nothing will happen until Colchester Council agree to cull the white elephants still breeding in the "cultural quarter".

A political exclusive leads the Mail on Sunday. Its own investigation has revealed that the man appointed by the government to run the Public Works Loans Board - the Treasury body responsible for £60bn of loans for infrastructure projects - was declared bankrupt in 2012. As the paper points out, anti-sleaze rules spell out that anyone on a public body who becomes bankrupt must inform the relevant minister and this did not happen in the case of Tony Caplin.

But the paper's expose had immediate results. Within hours of the MoS informing Downing Street, Mr Caplin had left his post.
