Essex County Standard: New cash hope to create our 'Lanes' New cash hope to create our 'Lanes'

PROJECTS to create an independent shopping quarter in Colchester and turn the former police station into a business centre could be revived by an ambitious funding bid.

The Shops on the Walls scheme, earmarked for streets such as Sir Isaac’s Walk and Eld Lane, has stalled due to lack of investment.

The idea is to create a high quality shopping area, similar to Brighton’s famous Lanes.

Funding is also needed to turn the old police station, in Queen Street, into a creative business centre after an EU bid was rejected.

A saviour could have been found in Essex’s economic growth plan, which will be submitted to the Government next week.

Essex County Council’s cabinet yesterday agreed to stump up £115million for infrastructure projects between 2015 and 2021.

Stop funding the firsts*ite parasites year after year. That will free up some public money and no one will probably notice when they are gone. You could even turn the rusty golden shed into something useful that people actually want to visit.

Not surprised the EU bid was rejected. Even though they love handing out public money on pointless projects, the stench of failure associated with CBC, firsts*ite and the Cultural Quarter is just too strong to ignore now.

There seems no public demand for more artistic white elephants after the VAF disaster. Colchester Council has repeatedly refused to permit the VAF to be a viable commercial enterprise. Where is the money coming from to run this proposed creative business centre? Priority has to be given to front line services and that clearly puts the art elite last.
