VILLAGERS fear 170 new homes will not go to local families.

Bloor Homes’ plans for redevelopment of Rowhedge Wharf went on display yesterday.

If the plans go ahead, the properties would be sold privately, with none set aside as affordable housing.

Stuart Hurr, who lives near the proposed 4,500sq ft riverside development, said: “We desperately need homes for our children, not lovely, big, five-bed houses.

"The worry for a lot of people will be that the homes won’t be for us.”

There's a wonderful world outside of the place you grow up in, and most people I know desire (at least for the middle section of their life) to actually fly the roost properly and not move in down the road from their parents. I feel that more affordable housing should be built nationally anyway, but I like diversity and I'd rather places had a good mix of people who grew up in the area and newcomers. There shouldn't really be any priority to locals, but if local people want new homes or even to buy a second home for their children then what's stopping them from choosing ones on the new development anyway?

Yes exactly agree with both. There seems to be a belief that any one should be able to live where ever they want these days. That is sadly not the case I would love to live down fitzwalter off lexden road but despite me and my other half both working very hard I know i will never afford it. It's life. There will still be plenty of cheaper properties within a few miles anyway.

These people are the same sort of people who believe that buying a house gives you ownership of the road outside it!

Who cares about where their kids live? It's capitalism. The kids live where they get work. There is no moral right to live where you grew up.

Sadly, this mentality is very narrow minded. I am all for affordable housing. I was raised in a council house and will remain working class until I die, regardless of how much money I do/don't earn. But sometimes it is not possible to have what is not yours, so if this man wants affordable housing for his children, in a place where it is not possible, then could some one tell Ferrari to make cheaper motors, because I want one of those.
Britain us a very diverse country. Some children will go to University, some will immigrate and some will live at home with their parents until they are 40.
Get a grip man.
