Hotel back on the cards for St Botolph's Quarter

Essex County Standard: Hotel back on the cards for St Botolph's Quarter Hotel back on the cards for St Botolph's Quarter

A NEW hotel is back on the cards for Colchester’s St Botolph’s Quarter under new plans which will create 100 jobs.

Last year, Colchester Council’s regeneration hopes were shattered when Travelodge pulled out of long-awaited plans to knock down St James House and Roman House and build a three-star hotel in their place.

Now, months after a cinema operator unveiled proposals to move into Roman House, an 85-bed hotel is once again proposed alongside restaurants, cafes, apartments and townhouses.

Nick Barlow, councillor responsible for regeneration, said: “I’m excited about the potential new development of the St Botolph’s site."

Does this mean that the cinema is not now happening, or is this hotel going to be in a different part of "St.Botolph's Quarter"? Details, please!

So let me get this clear

They are building at Middle borough behind the trendies wine bar 100 jobs 80 room ish hotel?

Now someone else is proposing 100 beds at St Bots?

They are supposed to be converting Grey friars into another Trump Tower of residence for the privileged

The Red Lion and The George cant fill their rooms what good is it going to do them with all these proposals and fly by night ideas?

In the end when everything goes T**S up we all end up paying for it! In one way or another!

Colchester Council reports now describe the "cultural quarter" as "St Botolphs quarter". And the Curzon cinema proposal was for the St James/Roman House block. So that suggests the latest fantasy development is in the area of the old bus station. So who would have the money to gamble for an expensive town centre redevelopment next to the local sodom and Gomorrah called Queen Street.

To clarify: the proposal area covers the "former Bus Station site, St. James House, Bus Depot and ticket office, replacing with a new Hotel, a mix of restaurant uses and townhouses and apartments" and complements "the new Curzon Cinema development planned at Roman House and the firstsite gallery".

Just seen the Gazette Tuesday. Apparently "Building Partnerships" of Norwich will be acting as advisor and finding the money for this risky gamble. Its "partners" are mostly local authorities but include two builders - Barratts and Taylor Wimpey. It highlights the Travelodge Norwich as one of its "most sustainable" developments!
.
Colchester Council has publicly stated it will not be funding developers of this site. That leaves the possibility of a developer with easy access to millions or perhaps Colchester Council guaranteeing a huge loan.
.
According to the paper Curzon cinemas was "selected" to build the cinema and restaurants in 2015. Now the latest additional fantasy proposal is for an 85 bed hotel, lots of flats and naturally more restaurants. With a few nightclubs and so called "private clubs" kebab alley will reach from St Botolphs roundabout to Castle park. Perhaps time to reopen the old police station to keep the drunken rabble under control!

Given his track record to date, shouldn't Nick Barlow, councillor responsible for regeneration, step down from this role? The town centre is dying and the council seem hell bent on accelerating its demise.

Come on "Bert". What difference would it make whatever elderly councillor was given the figure head role for regeneration? The money has run out but the white elephants are still breeding.
