A derelict bus depot should be turned into almshouses to help Colchester’s elderly residents live more independently, it has been claimed.
Michael Siggs, clerk to Winnocks and Kendalls Almshouse Charity in Military Road, Colchester, believes the former bus garage in Magdalen Road could be turned into a block of flats for older people.
The almhouse overlooks the depot and at Colchester Council’s Local Plan Committee on Monday night, Mr Siggs unveiled the charity’s ambitious plans for the site and said it had funds available to work in partnership with the authority.
In a letter to councillors, he said: “The bus garage site in Magdalen Street has long been a bone of contention for the residents of Kendalls Terrace.
“The buildings have mouldered to a rusty hulk, an eyesore of Colchester."
Colchester Council has agreed to look at the proposals.
