There's no such thing as an "unforeseen high tide", tide tables are widely available, more likely is that someone didn't bother to look at one.

Surely the first thing you do if you are organising something on the island. is to check the tide time. According to their website it includes "an optional sea swim" perhaps they decided to change the date as some might end up starting that halfway across the Strood;)

Agree with you Biggus Davus, anyone planning anything (apart from sunbathing perhaps) on a beach should look at the tide tables. TDC have one on line and it clearly states theres a tide of over 4m expected around lunchtime on the 1st March. Its a great idea for a fundraiser though but maybe somebody should introduce the organiser to the 6 's's - Prior Planning Prevents Pi** Poor Performance

Tide times can of course be forecast for hundreds of years ahead, so Biggus is right, it was the charity that failed to foresee the high tide for the chosen date. Anyway, the change means they have an extra week to raise sponsorship money.
