Is Eric Pickles "the worst local government secretary ever"?

Essex County Standard: Is Eric Pickles "the worst local government secretary ever"? Is Eric Pickles "the worst local government secretary ever"?

LEADING Colchester councillors have labelled local government boss Eric Pickles “the worst Secretary of State ever”.

A debate on a £1.3million cut to Colchester Council’s government grant for 2014/15 led to the angry comments.

Local authorities across the country are funded primarily by the Department for Communities and Local Government, led by Conservative MP Mr Pickles.

In next year’s budget, Colchester Council is set to raise charges and cut services in order to balance its books because of the £1.3million funding cut.

But Tim Young, councillor responsible for community safety and Labour group leader, warned under Mr Pickles, worse is to come.

He said: “In 2015/16, it will be even worse and we are going to struggle to provide the services our residents, the people of Colchester, deserve.

“Eric Pickles seems to be the worst Secretary of State for Local Government ever.

“His decision means next year we have got some even tougher decisions to make.”

Martin Hunt, deputy leader of Colchester Council, also said: “Eric Pickles must not really like local government.”

He added Mr Pickles wants local authorities to morph into “commissioning authorities” instead of providing services.

Eric Pickles is only dancing to Cameron's and Osborne's tune. It is of course Martin Hunt's party which is keeping the Cameron government in power. And our Lib Dem MP is playing his part in that.
Even if Labour win power in 2015, expect no change from Miliband, for he is not prepared to collect the billions of pounds owed by rich tax dodgers, which at a stroke could transform the government finances and enable funding for local government to be restored to former levels.

You may be right Boris but Pickles is not someone who fills me with any confidence. I will have to hold my nose when voting for SBR to represent the town this time. I cannot hold him responsible for many of the policies agreed to by the odious Clegg and his Tory pals. My vote will be a tactical one to help ensure that the local juvenile pranksters from the Tories do not add Colchester to their portfolio. There is absolutely no point in voting for anyone else to prevent this, pragmatism dictates that a vote for anyone other than SBR is wasted and will allow the nasty party in.

I don't believe a word Tim Young says, so Pickles has actually gone up in my estimation based on this. I thought Young was going to Ipswich? This town needs a break from his verbal diarrhoea.

Is Tim Young, councillor responsible for community safety, good at his job? Maybe you should ask some of the victims of late night violent crime in Colchester what they think?

CBC's track record of spending and investing public funds is a horror show. Cut their funds. There are many easy savings they could make, but they are too pigheaded and determined not to admit their own past mistakes, to actually take the tough decisions.

What are they then Bert. I'm sure the council would be delighted to hear your ideas.

I agree with you, Checkout. I would prefer to vote Green but, sadly, that would be a wasted vote here. Bob has disappointed me because he used to be a maverick but he now toes the Clegg line on almost everything (EMA for example). But he still stands up for Colchester on every possible occasion, and he is very sound on foreign policy issues. He is also very likeable, for a politician anyway.
Yesterday, at a meeting in one of Colchester's best pubs (the Fat Cat), ten of us agreed unanimously that Nick Clegg is the most despicable man in Britain.

I am puzzled why a government minister should be attacked for cutting government funding. We still have a deficit and the debt pile still gets bigger. Somewhere cuts have to be made and responsible local authorities would concentrate on essential services. There is no way the cultural white elephants still breeding in the now renamed St Botolphs area meet that criteria. Time for a cull of these bloated pachyderms.
.
I dare the councils to hold referendums over priorities. If we are the fastest growing town in Essex then their is no excuse for inadequate transport links or the present third world roads. We need schools fit for purpose and more community facilities. Yes, a glorious fantasy but public apathy will ensure nothing will change.
