Shopmobility on the move again

Shopmobility’s base, in St Runwald’s Street, behind Colchester Town Hall, is going to be taken over as part of the £30million redevelopment of the Williams and Griffin department store.

The scheme lends out scooters about 120 times a month.

Colchester Community Voluntary Services, which runs Shopmobility, is on the hunt for a new base.

Tracy Rudling, chief executive officer for Colchester Community Voluntary Services, said: “We have no complaints.

“The site is part of the Williams and Griffin redevelopment and we have known we would have to go by November.

“Our contract could have been terminated with three months notice.

“However, we have been allowed to carry on until November when our lease runs out.”

The service moved from the former Colchester bus station in Queen Street to a site next to St Mary’s car park in Manor Road and then to its home in St Runwald’s Street.

The town centre base has been considered a prime site because of its easy access and central location.

Mrs Rudling said: “The challenge is to find somewhere else as good as St Runwald’s Street.

“We will do everything we can in the next eight months to make that happen.”

Mrs Rudling said the transport scheme, which is open to anyone in danger of being socially excluded due to mobility problems, can be run from Colchester Community Voluntary Services’ base in Winsley House on East Hill, but she is hoping to find a central location.
