Record drop in crime in Colchester town centre, thanks to following serial offenders

Chief Insp Richard Phillibrown

CRIME in Colchester town centre has fallen to its lowest levels in three years.

The numer of incidents fell below 300 in November last year – the latest figures available – for the first time since monthly records were published in 2010.

Police are crediting an initiative which saw officers follow prolific offenders for the drop.

Chief Insp Richard Phillibrown, district commander for Colchester, said: “It is excellent to see the improvement.

“This has been achieved by some good work by the Safer Colchester Partnership and an uplift in police visibility.

“Operation Christmas Cracker was launched on November 11 and officers provided a significant presence in the town and built excellent relationships with the business community.

“This has enabled increased efficiency in identification and tracking of offenders in the town to prevent crimes occurring.

“I initially had a dedicated police officer presence in the town in August last year and, with these excellent results, that will continue in the new year.”

Mr Phillibrown hopes the trend will continue, but admitted December is always an exceptionally busy month.

Figures for every recorded crime fell from October to November, with a particularly sharp dip in violent crime.

The total dropped from 429 to 289.

Tim Young, Colchester councilor responsible for community safety, said: “It is very pleasing but we have got to be careful.

These are just figures for one month.

“It is evidence of the excellent partnership working between the local authoirty and police.

“We are all having to work smarter given the cutbacks.”

Good news that there is a reduction in crime, however don't believe the headline, this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

These figures are for just one month! Comparing figures for one month is not a representative picture of crime in Colchester. I'm pretty sure if the number of robberies, violent attacks, gun crime, knife crime, rape and murders over the past 12-18months were included you would see a different picture.

But you are still no around to stop the thugs beating people up in the town in the early hours, so drops some crime whilst increasing in others, false hope all round!

A pity those delinquents could not be tagged so they could be monitored at any time.

Always the same people on here who find it hard to accept positive news.
Since Chief Inspector Phillibrown took a hands-on involvement in Colchester's street culture, we have experienced a definite improvement 'not just in the town centre' but also in the housing estates, and suburbs. I have personally noticed that the doorway squatters and beggars have been removed from the town centre, also I have become aware the towns subways are well lit at night, security camera's operational, and the pill pushers have been moved on.
Groups of youngsters are monitored when congregating at night, and a higher profile police presence is evident.
There will always be room for even more improvement, but generally we should be proud and thankful for the efforts of the police and the ' safer Colchester partnership'..

As for the post above me by Nora I could quote some expletives here. ******

Mr Phillibrown and the team is not clear in this report to the gazette and it smacks of he usual rhetoric from days of old of show boating and pandering to the afternoon tea club brigade!

Where do these reports leave people like me? I have a semi disabled teenage son partially brain damaged, who was assaulted last year, yet there is no evidence to issue warrants.
The file has been put on local intelligence reporting due to lack of evidence!
I agree with all talk above in the quote, we must the victims of further massaging figures.
This type of crime targeting looks good on paper but it does not get rid of the underlying problem.
There are criminals out there that have been getting away with serious crime for years, they are the precursor in underlying crime that carries on and cultivates further offences that is committed by more fellow criminals.
To target a specific sector using some quango style title similar to the Parking Safety Partnership, then hail it as a success, is rather insulting to those that have been exposed to serious life threatening offences.
We are not impressed and nor should the public be.
It will not last for long it never does, The Poisoned Parochial Chalice will return to Colchester as it always does.

I could not agree more with the lady above!

What an utter load of c**P from the officer who posted this report to the gazette.
And as for Hyacinth Bucket sorry Nora don't worry you will be getting regular PCSO visits to protect your gnomes and flour beds.
There has been no divisional commander here for months why?
Does nobody want the job by any chance?
Mr Phillibrown has been doing a stand in job for the peeler's at lesser pay and rank!
To come on here and quote massaged figures like that which have targeted only a certain area of crime is nothing more than cynical manipulation of an already sore point!
Three years ago the gazette was riddled in reports of attacks in st botolphs eg kids kids getting there eyes half torn out.
The divisional boss did or said virtually nothing, then went on to promotion to another force with their husband who also got a plum posting too!!!
Crime in that area has now escalated into a violent gladiatorial extravaganza of near epidemic proportions, yet we are still being force fed this absolute tripe of mendacity:
Queue! the nanny state flag wavers in a moment who will want to put down my comments with the usual counters, which are always half baked and have no real content.
Are bl***dy lights are turned off at night in our development leaving us wide open for every wannabe Joker to come out and Riddle us with all and sundry miscreant behaviour, yet there will be no Caped Crusader to come to the rescue as my DVD will be bl***dy well stolen by then, coupled with a smashed in window.
I am sure there are Third Party Insurance issues here and the council could be brought to book over them soon?
My heart goes out to the poor woman above, I would want D**TH if that happened in my family!
I am surprised at the gazette for posting such B******T after the crap from Colchester Hospital for years on end.
Do you lot have no shame or do you just get sucked in to every piece of chip paper print reporting that is rammed down your throat.
Some years ago one of your own took a job in the Southway Joke Shop as the press PR Officer, after they where recruited by CID chums in the station.
The person did not last 5 minutes in there and went on to become a school teacher.
They must have been so enlightened with the work that it gave them a calling to go out and do something useful:
Do not worry Mr Phillibrown good move you will be promoted soon and we will still be getting are f*****g heads kicked, in as we walk past the bars in St Botolphs while you are enjoying the loads of money we pay you!
Please if you have think you have done well keep it to yourself.
We will know if this is the case, by the fact that we get home alive and breathing by the time we shut our front doors from a night out or a weekend shopping: NOT!!!!!

colossus says: Dear me why do you portray yourself as such a hard bitten, hysterical, full of hate and poison filled, victim?
Name calling, writing insults, and using abusive words to try to make your point, does nothing to persuade readers to take anything you say seriously.
Good healthy debate can be educational, nothing in the rules says we all have to agree, but to be civil and have mutual respect costs nothing.
Clearly you believe Colchester is a den of inequity, and you have no faith in the efforts of the police, or the authorities to maintain law and order.
In answer to this, all I can say is...Good thing you don't live in Bradford, or Leeds, or many towns in the north east, the East end of London, Southall, Brixton, Try using a cash point in 'Brick lane' at night.. Compared to many towns Colchester is Utopia.
