RESIDENTS and motorists have been given an “early Christmas present” after a £1.9 million project to upgrade one of Colchester’s worst roads was completed.
Campaigners were delighted when a major programme of works began in May to improve Berechurch Road following years of calls for action to repair a host of problems.
The road was fully reconstructed and lights and drains were improved in sections, which were closed off in stages to allow contractors Jackson Civils Limited to work safely.
Dave Harris, county councillor for Maypole division, said: “This is a brilliant early Christmas present for me and everyone who lives around here.
“Although I still have hopes of more such works further down Berechurch Road, I take heart from a finished job.”
Rodney Bass, councillor responsible for highways, said: “I am pleased that the Berechurch Road improvements have been completed on time.
"This is an important scheme for Colchester and will help to provide better facilities for more sustainable modes of transport.
"I would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation while work has been taking place."
