Essex County Standard: Couple get the pip in wrong phone number saga Couple get the pip in wrong phone number saga

A COUPLE mistakenly received hundreds of calls for a mental health service.

Steve and Grace Cowling, directors of the Braintree Engineering Company, in Albert Road, have an almost identical company number as that of the Gables, the mental health service in Bocking End.

The North Essex Partnership stressed that people must ring 01376 522 300 for the Gables, rather than the Braintree Engineering Company, which is 01376 552 300.

The partnership’s chief executive Andrew Geldard said: “Mrs Cowling said she well believes that one in four people has problems and she feels like they have spoken to many of them.

“We sympathise. We ask people to please make sure they dial the right number – and change your phone contacts too.

“Unfortunately, Mr and Mrs Cowling have also had angry calls from people believing they are speaking to us.

“This is never acceptable and no-one should be subjected to it.

“I’m sending Mrs Cowling flowers for her patience whilst we get the message out.’’

I used to get calls for Colchester Zoo, unsure why as the number I had wasn't anything like theirs, I even called their marketing team to see if it had ever been a number they used but it hadn't.

One caller was exceptionally rude when we tried to explain that we weren't the zoo and refused to listen. In the end I told her that if her and her family turned up wearing bunny ears as it was Easter they'd be allowed free entry. Would love to have been a fly on the wall for that one.

Another caller was bringing a group of disabled kids to the zoo and wanted to know what disabled facilities we had and despite answering the phone clearly not as Colchester Zoo, she went off on a tirade saying that she couldn't believe in this day and age that such a place didn't have disabled facilities and that she'd report us to the local council.

One woman wanted to know what animals we had, she didn't seem too impressed that we only had a cat and a dog.

Of course, around April 1st was always amusing when the calls for Rory Lion and Mr G Raffe came though.
