A £90,000 project to overhaul an old play area is taking shape.

The site, for four to 14-yearolds, is being created at Bergholt Road Open Space, in Colchester.

It is being led by residents Stephen Pitt, Liz Riggs and Elaine Appleyard, together with Myland Community Council.

The original equipment does not meet modern requirements and will be replaced.

The new equipment will include an aerial runway, slides, a see-saw, a multi-play unit and swings, and a basket swing which can be used by children with disabilities.

Fencing will also be put up, a rubber safety-surface laid and bins and benches installed.

It is expected everything will be complete by early next year.

Funding is coming from the Co-op Community Fund, which has awarded £6,862, the Veolia Environmental Trust, which has given £25,000, £28,500 from Colchester Council Section 106 funds, £15,000 from Cory Environmental Trust, and £6,374 from the Community Initiatives Fund.

Community members had the chance to say what they wanted in the new-look area.

When it was deciding how it would look, the community council consulted residents and two schools to identify the equipment they would like.

The results were used by play equipment suppliers to produce plans and these were taken into the schools and put on the Bergholt Road website for people to vote on.

Helen Harris, community council clerk, said: “It is great that work has started and the revamp is taking shape.

“Residents cannot wait to see the equipment installed and in use.

“As well as the revamped play area being a place for lots of fun, it will also help improve youngsters’ health and fitness.’’
