Burst water main could affect motorists for days

EMERGENCY repairs to a burst water main at a busy Colchester junction could affect motorists until Monday.

Anglian Water’s ten-inch pipe burst late last night beneath the A1124 Southway at Balkerne Hill.

Traffic was moving slowly this morning after one lane of lane of traffic was closed on Southway.

Sara Brown, Anglian Water spokesman, apologised for the delays to motorists and pledged to reduce the impact at further peak times.

“The repair is complicated because of its location and because the pipe is very deep underground and we’ve had to close one lane of traffic to carry out the work as quickly and safely as possible.

“However, to avoid disruption during peak times, we are removing the lane closure this afternoon until 9.30am tomorrow.

“Our engineers are working hard to complete this complex job but we believe it will take until the end of the weekend to return things to normal.

“No customers are without water, however we do apologise for the inconvenience this is causing to drivers in the area at this time.”

Don't we just know it!! Hasn't the roundabout only recently been dug up for the same problem?? I commute from Sudbury to Colchester every day, and the traffic chaos only seems to get worse. Working near the new bus station on Osborne street, my route takes me freom Sudbury on the A134, Northern Approach, Turner Road, Westway, up the hill and down Southway. Northern approach to work shouldn't take 30 minutes!!!! Same on the way out, try going the other way - Magdalen to Ipswich Road and out via Severalls!! Colchester is drowing - such chaos will only drive people away....

with 2000 more houses being built in Colchester within the next year we will have around 4000 more cars on Colchester roads, 8000 kids needing schools and about 500 more commuters on the trains to London.
But that's ok.. Colchester council says we can handle it lol

spent an hour driving round colchester hospital looking for a parking space.
never seen it that bad before either.
queues for the car park were into turner road between both entrances.
blue badge spaces were double parked, with parking infringement officers having a field day with sticky yellow & black notices & photos taken for backup..

so glad I dont live nor visit Colchester that often.....

You could catch a train from Sudbury, or park at Marks Tey and get the train from there. The thing is that everybody in a traffic jam is also part of the cause of the traffic jam. Colchester is drowning, it is true, but so many of those people are driving distances which they could easily walk. Not you, of course, but perhaps it is worth looking at, and may be a far less stressful way of getting to work.

Fair enough, you've got me there! We've just got to persuade some of the others to leave the car behind for the shorter journeys.
