A FOOTBALL tournament set up in memory of a teenager has been brought to a close.

Alexander Launder died in November 2007 when he was 13 after he was involved in a fatal accident in Layer Road, Colchester.

The Alex Launder Memorial Tournament was set up in his memory six years ago.

However, the family has now said it is time to bring it to an end.

Alex was a keen football fan supporting Liverpool and Colchester United.

His mother Natalie said: “The tournament was founded in celebration of awonderful young man and his passion for football.

“The competition has given Alex’s friends, family and the school community a way to celebrate and remember him and has provided an exciting, competitive and memorable experience for all involved.

“It has been a hard decision to make, but this year’s tournament will be the final year for the competition.

“The tournament was set up to support Alex’s friends, brother and family through a difficult journey.

“As his friends move on to follow their own dreams and aspirations, the tournament has come to a natural conclusion.

“We are reassured it has played an important role in supporting these young adults in remembering Alex.”

Teams from schools including Stanway, Philip Morant, Thomas, Lord Audley, St Helena, Colchester High, Alderman Blaxill and Thurstable took part in the contest this year.

Winners’ trophies and medals were presented by players from Colchester United, including Sammy Szmodics, who went to Stanway School.

Alex’s brother Harry also competed in the Year 11 team for Stanway School.

Philip Morant School won the Year 7 competition with Thomas, Lord Audley School winning the Year 11 title.

Natalie added: “Everyone who had the pleasure to meet Alex was touched by kindness, his smile, his amazing sense of humour and his singing.

“He was a special son who is missed in each and every way.

“We will continue to celebrate Alexander who is forever in our hearts and always in our thoughts.”

Amemorial match will still be held by Stanway School where Alex was a pupil.
