COLCHESTER Zoo has said there was no evidence of "foul play" that could have led to the escape of five wolves.

The animals were discovered missing from their steel enclosure at 7.30am on Tuesday.

One wolf returned of its own accord and another was tranquilised and recaptured a short time after the pack was discovered missing.

Two other wolves left were shot dead a short time later, after being hit first by anaesthetic darts.

An eight-hour armed police siege culminated in the fifth missing wolf being shot dead by a zoo marksman on land close to the Maldon Road attraction at 4pm. 

The zoo launched an investigation into the escape and has confirmed said there was no evidence of foul play.

Bosses said they are struggling to comprehend how the wolves managed to break out of the enclosure, when it is checked daily.


In a statement it said it was "devastated" by the incident, adding: "Everyone involved would be grateful for time now to grieve for our lost animals away from further media intrusion. 

"We would also like to add our deep gratitude for the many messages of support that we are receiving."
