TORY MP Douglas Carswell wants tougher restrictions to stop an influx of migrants from Romania and Bulgaria.
Mr Carswell, MP for Clacton, has called for an amendment to the Immigration Bill because he fears there will be huge number of Bulgarians and Romanians moving to the UK when restrictions are lifted on January 1.
If his amendment is voted through in the House of Commons, free movement would be delayed until December, 2018.
Mr Carswell said: “The average income in Romania and Bulgaria is a fraction of what it is here..
“Ministers would rather I did not try to force through this change in the law, but I am not in Parliament to do what they want.
“I am putting Britain first and we have had enough uncontrolled immigration.”
