A SCHOOL has been told it needs to improve by Ofsted after an inspection.

Walton Primary School, Walton-on-the-Naze, was visited by Ofsted inspectors who said the quality of teaching and achievement of students must be improved and they gave the school an overall rating of requiring improvement.

However, they praised the school’s leadership and management, as well as the behaviour of pupils.

Inspectors said the quality of teaching is steadily getting better, but is currently inconsistent, while some of the top achievers are not being challenged enough.

They also want pupils to be given more scope to learn independently.

Headteacher Suzie Bliss said: “After the inspection we are particularly pleased inspectors have recognised the many improvements which have been made in our school.

“The report says pupils enjoy their learning. The teaching of reading is now an area of notable strength and progress in maths across the school has improved.”

While some areas are improving, inspectors said a major weakness was the spelling, punctuation and grammar of pupils.
