Cancer scandal: Chairman under fire for refusing to talk

Essex County Standard: Cancer scandal: Chairman under fire for refusing to talk Cancer scandal: Chairman under fire for refusing to talk

THE chairman of Colchester’s hospital trust has refused to give the media any interviews despite the scandal breaking four days ago.

Sally Irvine has still not confirmed when she will speak in public.

Mrs Irvine’s prolonged silence has been criticised by Karen Webb, regional director of the Royal College of Nursing and Colchester's MP Sir Bob Russell.

Ms Webb said: “It is a despicable act for the senior leaders of an organisation to try to pass the buck on to more junior managers and refuse to account fully for their part in decision making.

“The buck stops with the leader of the trust. It is on their watch and the chairman is declining to comment. "

Mrs Irvine was appointed trust chairman in August 2010 and reappointed to the role in August this year. She earns £35-40,000 a year for her part-time role, which is due to expire on July 31, 2016.

Among her roles, Mrs Irvine chairs the hospital’s board of directors, council of governors, and nominations committee.

The next board of directors meeting at Colchester General Hospital is on December 12.

Sir Bob Russell said: “With such a long time before the next meeting of the hospital board, I feel it is crucial, in the interests of upholding the public’s confidence in the cancer treatment services at Colchester Hospitals and to lift the morale of hospital staff, that those at the head of the trust do not stay behind closed doors. Silence is not helpful.”

Happy to take public money in terms of salary but not happy to do her job. Mind you, when she's suing the trust for unfair dismissal, which will inevitably happen, she'll be more than happy to talk.

Why is she still in post? The buck stops with her, she is the one that has created or allowed to be created the culture that led to the bullying and falsification. She needs to be removed immediately if we are to restore any confidence in the the NHS Trust.

I think I'd like to read the report from an independent external inquiry before rushing to judgement about non-executive directors failings. There is a great deal of anxiety about this whole fiasco within our community and we need some answers. However easy it is to point the finger, we really do need to know where the faults lay and who should have done something about it. I also want to hear what the police have to say, have crimes been committed?
This has gone on for some time, it's not a recent happening. Why no one in authority seemingly addressed the problems and what is being done to rectify the situation must be the focus of our concerns.
This whole subject needs some grown up, joined up thinking and not some sound bite emotive responses.

You cannot blame these people that take these posts?

They get put there under the guise of rules and the law.

They are not accountable to anyone Ombudsman generally never cross swords with them for two reasons.

1. The Ombudsman are generally cowards

2. Most of them get these chummy plum jobs when they retire from grey suit service.

The problem lies in many areas
1. Their offices are normally with the Chief's of the trusts sometimes they even use the same PA's

2. Its far too close and chummy with those that they are suppose to over see, so accountability is well out of the window.

3. When the body bags start appearing its hands in the air and the usual "I did not know" or " The bucks stop with Joe Bloggs".

Another NHS trust in the county has a chair there, who also Chairs FIrst Site at the same time****

Lets face it how many Chairs can you sit on in one go and involve your attention to detail to its utmost????

Basically they do not really care or in laymans language they do not give a F***K

They get their up to 35k a year

And by the way some of them are running registered companies to run their wares for what they are being paid for. 3 chairmanships is a very nice way to earn a 100k a year.

When the S**T hits the fan they wont speak out why should they????
Who is going to make them???

MP's dont have The Power, The Clout or The Balls to give them a run for their money anymore!!!!

And dont they know it????

Thats why nothing is getting done and people are getting killed in the process...

Think about it???? The math is simple

********PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY IN POSITIONS OF POWER*********

The President of the USA has been doing it for years.

Seems like there is much more to come which The gazette is not yet reporting though there is a big feature about Cancer Treatment at Colchester (they've pictured the wrong hospital again - most happens at Essex County) in the national Observer due for publication on Sunday.

The headline reads "Colchester hospital hit by fresh fears over falsified cancer records. At least 6,000 patients could be affected in scandal at Colchester general hospital as inquiry looks at CEO's role in bullying"

Kick her, MacDonnell and Coutts out, a member of the general public could do a better job than those three put together. None of them are fit for purpose or deserve a second chance, put them all in the same taxi!
