5:30pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
Colchester Council's planning committee has approved a bid to build 1,600 homes in the north of the town by eight votes to two.
A Government minister will have to ratify the decision before work can start.
The first homes are due to go on the market in 2016.
Also promised are a primary and secondary school, a shopping precinct with a small supermarket, a community centre with sports hall and road improvements south of North Station Roundabout.
Protected from development will be 33.5 hectares of land, including the historic Chesterwell Wood, while Mile End Recreation Ground will also be extended with a cricket ground and two more football pitches.
