Burglary look-out jailed for drugs and theft offences
3:00pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
A BURGLARY look-out has been sent to jail after breaching the terms of a suspended prison sentence.
Kelly Chater kept watch outside a house in London Road, Clacton while a man broke in and stole electrical goods and jewellery in May this year.
Chater, 30, was given a 12-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, when she appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court in July.
The sentence was activated yesterday after she was convicted of possessing heroin, a class A drug, on September 3 this year and theft from a Morrison's supermarket on September 12 this year.
Drug addict Chater was told she will serve part of the sentence behind bars but will be released on licence to complete the punishment.
Sentencing Chater at Chelmsford Crown Court, Recorder Adrian Williamson QC said: "Were it not for the suspended sentence, the court would not be contemplating a custodial penalty.
"But you have left the court with no alternative but to bring the suspended sentence in effect."
Chater, Hampstead Avenue, Clacton, was given no separate penalty for drug possession or the supermarket theft.
