Bike thieves steal wheels
11:00am Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
A CYCLIST returned to his bike to find only the frame remained after somebody stole the wheels.
The bike was still securely locked to railings in Trinity Square, Colchester, when the owner returned at 5.10pm on Monday, September 16.
Dozens of bikes have been stolen in and around Colchester this summer many of which may have been taken by a gang of thieves operating in north Essex.
Colchester’s crime reduction officer, Stephen Armson-Smith, has offered advice to the growing number of cyclists in the town.
He urged people to buy locks worth about ten to 15 per cent of the value of the bike and ideally gold standard security locks from sites such as soldsecure.com
He also urged people to take a picture of their bike with them in it and to get the frame marked.
Anyone who wants advice should call Essex Police on 101 and Mr Armson-Smith on extension 430386.
Anyone with information about the theft call Colchester police station on 101.
