  • "Don't ban it; just don't listen to it if you don't like it. Banning things you disagree with is the start of a very slippery slope. Are you, for example, going to listen to every single popsong ever to work out which should be heard?"

Students call for "Blurred Lines" song ban

First published in News by

A PETITION has been launched by Essex uni students aiming to ban a song they claim glamourises rape.

It has attracted 37 signatures calling for Robin Thicke's ‘Blurred Lines’ to be removed from Student Union playlists.

The number one hit, which features Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I., features suggestive lyrics such as ‘I know you want it’.

It has already been banned by Edinburgh and Leeds Universities.

It is not known which student created the petition.

Becky Fisher, president of the University of Essex Students’ Union said they would review the students' concerns once student members return to University next week.

She added: “We’ve done a lot of excellent work in this area in recent years, including our zero tolerance policy on sexual harassment, the banning of lads mags and page three in the Campus Shop and not running theme nights or advertising that objectifies women.”

Robin Thicke has defended the lyrics to NME magazine claiming they have been misconstrued.

He said: “We were just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time.

“If you listen to the lyrics it says 'that man is not your maker' so it's actually feminist movement within itself."
