STAND Tall giraffes raised more than £115,000 for charity when they went under the hammer at Firstsite.
The 30 giraffe figurines, which have been dotted across the borough since June 2, were auctioned off at a gala evening at the art gallery to raise money for Cochester Zoo’s charity, Action for the Wild.
About 300 people attended the event last night, run by Colchester auctioneers Reeman Dansie, with some giraffes selling for between £6,000 and £7,000.
Big Catrina, designed by Alison Burchert, was the top-priced giraffe, which sold at £6,800.
It was expected to fetch between £4,00 and £6,000.
A spokeswoman for the Maldon Road zoo said: “I think everyone in Colchester would say the giraffes have become part of us.
“We have been really proud to be part of the Stand Tall project, which has been fantastic for the people of Colchester.”
In total, the event raised £115,450 for the charity, with individual art lovers as well as north Essex businesses adding to the pot.
Each of the girafffes were designed by north Essex artists.
They spent three months on show in the town before going to Colchester Zoo for a farewell tour before being put on show on the banks of the Thames, in London.
