Colchester: Toy chain set to open in former JJB Sports store
A MAJOR toy shop chain has confirmed it will open in Colchester’s High Street, the Gazette can exclusively reveal.
The Entertainer is poised to take over half of the former JJB Sports building.
Up to a dozen jobs will be created when the store opens by next Easter.
The news ends months of speculation that a major clothes retailer could take over the 22,519 sq ft premises.
Gary Grant, owner and founder of The Entertainer, said: “We have been looking at Colchester for four to five years to try to find the right building and that has been a challenge.
“We are absolutely delighted to be here. I am sure a lot of your readers will know us from our shops.”
Mr Grant said the focus of the family business was to sell ‘traditional’ toys, such as Lego and My Little Pony, and it does not sell games consoles.
He said since the departure of Woolworths stores from British high streets in 2009, opportunities for more of their shops had arisen.
Builders have this week started start work inside the four-storey former JJB Sports building.
The Entertainer will use half of the ground floor area for sales space and the basement for storage.
The rest of the building is being marketed for another tenant.
