Community safety boss urges street lights re-think
6:00pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in News
COLCHESTER community safety boss Tim Young attacked plans to turn lights off in parts of Colchester, labelling them “dreadful”.
Mr Young also said the pilot scheme in Maldon and Uttlesford was not representative of the rest of the county.
He said: “This is a dreadful idea.
“I will certainly be opposing this.
“If it is being based on the pilot, Maldon and Uttlesford are not exactly representative of the rest of Essex.
“Making places darker does not make them safer.
“This is penny pinching by the county council, but public safety is not the place to save money.”
Anne Turrell, leader of Colchester Council, added: “Speaking purely personally, we shouldn’t be turning the lights off.
“We are an urban area and we need the lights on.
“Things might be different in more rural districts, but my feeling is, it wouldn’t be right here in Colchester.”
Colchester Council cabinet will debate the plans, but no date has been set yet.
