Colchester: Activist posts online Jumbo plea
A POLITICAL activist has urged Colcestrians to back a bid to transform the town’s Jumbo Tower, via an online video.
Darius Laws, who stars in the minute-long broadcast called Save Our Jumbo, said the issue “epitomizes the need for our decision-makers and politicians to do better”.
Owner George Braithwaite, who paid £330,000 for Jumbo, wants to divide it into 11 levels for offices, flats, restaurant, cafe, a museum and observatory.
The proposals also include filling in Jumbo’s legs with glass.
Urging residents to be “realistic” about those plans, Conservative Mr Laws said if they were opposed, it would lead to “decades more neglect and decay and a lost opportunity to provide economic growth and enhancement for our town centre.”
He concludes the YouTube video by urging residents to contact Colchester’s MP Sir Bob Russell and all elected councillors to voice their support for the plans.
Last month English Heritage said the proposals would harm the architectural and historic character of the tower.
Sir Bob urged Colchester Council to listen its advice and not make a recommendation to destroy the Grade II Listed building’s character.
