Dog owners fork out more than £2,300 in fines
DOG owners in Colchester have forked out more than £2,300 in fines since April for letting their pets stray.
Wardens at Colchester Council have picked up 57 stray dogs in the past four months, and only been able to return 36 of them.
Owners of stray dogs with a collar or microchip can be charged £65 if wardens collect the animals.
The fee rises to £75 if the dog has no collar or chip, while a council officer returning a dog incurs a £25 charge. Overnight kennel fees cost £13 per night.
But the council said it was not a money-making service and was keen to promote responsible dog ownership, as well as reuniting owners with their dogs.
- Bark in the Park, organised by the council, takes place in Lower Castle Park this Sunday. For more information visit the event website.
