Have-a-go hero assaulted during attempted burglary
7:00pm Tuesday 13th August 2013 in News
A HAVE-A-GO hero was punched in the face after confronting hooded burglars in his garden.
The 24-year-old heard them trying to get into the house, then the shed, and went out to protect his family.
But he doesn’t want people to follow his example and admits he took a big risk because they could have been armed.
Police are appealing for information following the attempted burglary in the Newbridge Road area of Tiptree at about 3am on Saturday.
He said: “I was in bed and my room is right above the front door.
“I heard the handle being pushed so I got up and went downstairs.
“There was one man at the back gate and another going towards the shed.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have gone out but all I was thinking was keeping them out of the house and my family safe.”
He began shouting at them and was blocking the escape route for one of them.
He added: “He had to go through me and he came over and covered me up while the other one hit me a couple of times.
“Thinking now they could have had a knife or a crowbar or something so it could have been a lot worse.”
The victim has been left with a black eye and bruised face.
The burglars left empty handed.
They were white and aged in their 20s.
They were dressed in black with hooded tops pulled up around their faces.
The victim said: “I couldn’t stand the idea of them coming into my house and had to look after my family.
“I feel ok and the main thing is people are aware they are out there.
“My parents were shook up and I keep reassuring them they won’t come back.
“I am not sure if I would do it again and should have just called the police but I wasn’t going to watch them take our stuff and I think the only reason I got hit was I was blocking their way out.”
Anyone with information about the burglary call Det Con Jennings at Colchester CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
