Charity boxes stolen during hairdresser burglary
6:00pm Tuesday 13th August 2013 in News
CHARITY box stealing burglars have been condemned for their heartless crime after breaking into a hairdressers.
The cowardly criminals smashed their way through a glass panel at the front of Uppercut, London Road, Stanway, before walking away with three charity boxes.
Police are appealing for information following the burglary which took place between 5pm on Saturday and 7am yesterday.
Owners Martin and Stacey Wheeler are now considering installing security shutters at the salon which they took over in January.
Mr Wheeler said: “They kicked in the bottom glass panel on the front door.
“We got in and there was no other damage to the shop and we searched to find out what had gone and realised it was the three charity boxes.
“They were for Help for Heroes, St Helena Hospice and the Air Ambulance.
“It took a while for us to realise what they had been after.
“You could see them from the front and we had just got into the habit of leaving them there.”
The door will cost about £150 to fix but it is the loss for those in need which has hurt the couple most.
Mr Wheeler added: “It is frustrating most of all.
“It would have been just somebody wanting money for drugs or drink and these boxes were here to help some of those best charities there are and this money has been taken from people who need it.
“We are going to have to get security shutters and CCTV now.
“It is the first incident since 2005 when someone broke in and took the television and we have taken the tv down.”
It is not known exactly how much was in each box but they had just been supplemented with an extra £20 each following a recent donation.
Any witnesses call Colchester police on 101.
