Aliens? No, it's the U's stadium alarm
BAFFLED residents scoured Colchester’s skies for space ships after being awoken by a “bizarre” sounding drone in the small hours.
The noise - intercepted by a booming voice - was heard by residents in the Highwoods and Mill Road areas shortly after midnight on Sunday.
The hour-long din also saw residents peeping out from behind their curtains, locking their doors and pleading for it to stop via Twitter.
Essex Police were even contacted.
Colchester United confirmed the noise had come from a safety announcement at its stadium, triggered by the fire alarm going off.
Sarah Bilton, 26, could hear the noise from her home in Enville Way, Highwoods, two miles away from the stadium.
She said: “It sounded a bit bizarre. It was like an alarm that had somebody speaking through it but we couldn’t work out what they were saying. I got my boyfriend out of bed to check the doors were locked.
“It lasted about an hour and it was quite loud.
“We could see people looking out of their windows wondering what it was.”
Leticia Harry Turver said: “We called the police. We live in Mile End with just the rugby club between us. The key holder didn't get to turn it off for an hour!
“It was a typical alarm matched with a female voice telling them to exit - joy at midnight!”
Brian Allen said: “We heard it too living near the rugby club and searched the sky for alien ships but fire alarm sounds more likely.”
Twitter users also voiced their bemusement and frustration.
A Colchester United spokesman said the alarm went off due to a sensor giving an incorrect warning to the security system.
“As soon as we got the call, we were out here to deactivate it and thankfully there was no fire or damage to the stadium,” he added.
