'We need action on dangerous junction'
1:00pm Wednesday 14th August 2013 in News
RESIDENTS are demanding action on a problem junction which has seen a number of near misses since the start of the year.
At the moment, there is a mini-roundabout at the junction of Goojerat Road and Kensington Road, but residents say it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
Derek Walker, 37, who lives in Kensington Road, in Colchester, is calling on neighbours to come forward to show the strength of their feeling.
“People are ignoring the junction as it is,” he said.
“There has been so many near misses and at the very least, it should be made a simple T-junction, so people will automatically be more cautious.”
Kensington Road is part of the Taylor Wimpey development, which has seen a number of families move in since January, making the surrounding roads busier.
Mr Walker also said the junction is particularly dangerous to cars turning right from Goojerat Road into Kensington Road, and for cars turning right out of that road.
Lyn Barton, borough councillor for Shrub End, said extra signs to warn motorists would help, especially for motorists coming from Butt Road.
She added: “I don’t want to be in a position where we have a serious accident before it is taken seriously.”
An Essex County Council spokesperson said the mini roundabout was planned in preparation for the Tesco development in Butt Road, which will require articulated lorry access.
Its road safety team has inspected the roundabout and it has been declared safe.
