One in four Colchester Council staff on zero-hour contracts
ONE in four Colchester Council staff are employed on zero-hour contracts.
In the last financial year 344 of the 1,307 contracted workers at the authority were on the controversial contracts.
Zero-hour contracts have come under the spotlight recently with the government’s Business Secretary Vince Cable carrying out a review of the practice, with opponents saying they exploit workers and supporters claiming they offer flexibility.
Adrian Pritchard, chief executive of Colchester Council, said it was right the issue was looked at but the council’s contracts helped fill short and often temporary or seasonal roles, particularly in leisure services, and was not exploitative.
