Future plan for Stanway unveiled
12:00pm Sunday 21st July 2013 in News
AMBITIOUS plans to develop Stanway into a retail, business and leisure centre have been revealed.
Developers want to create a country park, new school and leisure facilities.
Plans for hundreds of new homes have also been included in the draft proposals as well as commercial and employment sites.
Three of the major landowners in the area have worked together to come up with the blueprint.
If approved by Colchester Council later this month it would become part of the planning policy - meaning any future plans submitted which are part of the document will be approved.
Under new planning guidelines Colchester Council is considering “blurring the lines” between retail and employment land.
It would mean developers could bring in more shops to Tollgate if offices were not being filled.
The change would have major implications for sites such as the old Sainsbury’s - which has sat unused since it was designated as employment land when the supermarket moved to a larger site.
A public consultation held last year saw residents put forward what they want to see in Stanway.
Among the suggestions were a cinema, more restaurants, shops and cafes.
