A LEADING human rights expert from Essex University has been chosed to head an influential United Nations committee.

Professor Sir Nigel Rodley has been elected chairman of the UN’s Human Rights Committee.

Sir Nigel, who is chairman of the university’s Human Rights Centre, will now head up the 18-strong committee and monitor the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He said: “It is a great honour to be elected by one's colleagues. The election comes at a time when the committee and its sister bodies under other UN human rights treaties are under review.

“As chairman over the next two years I will be required to play a key role in ensuring we are in a better position than now to help protect the victims of human rights violations.”
