Housing benefit changes 'unworkable' say council

CHANGES to housing benefit have been branded “unworkable” by Colchester Council.

In a motion passed during a full meeting last night the council will ask the Government to re-examine the so-called bedroom tax.

Concerns were raised by councillors about the impact on disabled, divorced and low-income families, with some saying it was unfair to cut benefits to people with extra bedrooms when they could not downsize because of a lack of social housing of the right size.

Some Conservative councillors voted against the motion, but it was passed with a “substantial majority” according to chairman Christopher Arnold.

The changes are indeed unworkable, but our council, like all other councils, has to implement them. These cruel changes are inflicted by the national coalition of Lib Dems and Conservatives. Why don't our Lib Dem councillors split off from Clegg's sinking ship?
