Cyclist and van collide

A CYCLIST has been rushed to hospital with head injuries after a crash on Ipswich Road.

The cyclist collided with a van near the Waitrose supermarket.

Police closed the northbound Ipswich Road, in Colchester, while paramedics treated the man at the scene.

The air ambulance was called and hovered but he was eventually taken to Colchester General Hospital by land ambulance.

The road closure caused traffic problems along Ipswich Road, Cowdray Avenue, East Hill and all the way into the High Street.

The crash took place just after 8am near a pedestrian crossing.

Presumably because there are hospitals with specialist care facilities e.g spinal etc.. and Colchester isn't one of them?
The closest hospital isn't always the very best in the area for the patient's needs.

I don't suppose you would be asking that question if the cyclist had been one of your relatives.

Well said Meadowlady. Cannot quite believe somebody was insensitive enough to make a comment like that in the first place xx

The crash was at the crossing at the bottom, I guess he was crossing the road at the time.

The cycle lane on the Western side of Ipswich Road ends at Broadlands Way, it only starts again at the pedestrian crossing opposite Waitrose.
So cyclists are not only perfectly entitled to use that section of Ipswich Road, they are also legally obliged to stay off the pavement.

gazette need to get there facts right it was a lorry that hit him and im glad they called the air ambulance so what if it costed them money it would of saved his life if he needed it, when your in a rush them lights arnt the quickest too change hence the fact he crossed there because there is no other way a cyclist can cross down there and so what if its illegal to bike on the path do you expect people too bike on the road and get killed by careless drivers just think if he was biking on that road he would probley not be here right now. cant believe you JBOSWICK is that insensitive too question something like that,he was unconcious with head injuries what do you expect paramedics too do they didnt know the full extent of his injurys so didnt wanna risk moving him which could prevent more injurys (especially with all the pot holes on the road now a days)
