Military Show returns to Colchester
5:00pm Tuesday 19th March 2013 in News
THE COLCHESTER Military Festival is set to return this summer.
Renamed the 16 Air Assault Brigade and Colchester Garrison Show, it has teamed up with the Paras 10 run and the Armed Forces Rugby League World Cup to take over Abbey Field on Saturday, July 6.
The military festival was scrapped in 2010 to cut costs. This year’s revamped show will be free for the first time.
Colonel Mike Newman, garrison commander, said he was very proud it was making a comeback.

.
If the Garrison had not been extended and revitalised in the 1850s, Colchester would have withered and failed to thrive.
.
At that time the industries centred around the Army, such as clothing factories, shoe factories, and all the other provisioning and supplies companies, employed the majority of the townsfolk, at a time when farming all over Europe had ceased to be a major employer.
.
Probably most of the longer-established Colchester families also have a soldier in their family tree! That would have been a welcome addition at a time when the local lasses outnumbered the local lads by a large number.

Excellent, sorely missed and being a town that is here because of the army will be well received . I only hope all our new out of town residents housed around the Abbey fields area appreciate this and understand our towns proud military history.

Always had an enjoyable time at this military festival.
I'm surprised to hear it will be free as I've always thought the entry fee was fair and well worth it
