Camra takes over Colchester Castle for ale festival

COLCHESTER Castle will today be transformed into a beer hall for four days only.

Around 40 ales from Essex and Suffolk breweries along with cider and locally-produced wines will be available at a bar inside the castle’s historic keep, staffed by volunteers from the Colchester and north east Essex branch of Camra.

Tim Young, councillor responsible for culture, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy fine ale and good company in Colchester's landmark Norman Castle.”

Entry, from 4pm to 10.30pm from today until Friday, is £6, including a commemorative glass.

They could have put it in the Leisure section where few people would have seen it.
Anyway it was mentioned before, a day or two ago, I think.

I guess CAMRA didn't stump up for pre-event advertising. So no 'advertorials' for them...

Great to see the castle stripped of all the exhibits etc, it really does make it a far more impressive space. Good idea to open it up for a few events during this time.

It actually a museums event back by CAMRA. I'm not sure it needs much advertising as enough people know about it to make it a success.

Also proves the Council can organise a p**s up in a Castle.

You generally can't take your own glass to beer festivals. You can normally get a refund but I assume as this is a one off then they don't want to be left with glasses at the end.

Fair play to CBC for having the where with all to talk to Camra and get it organised. Presume the profits go to the mayors charity or something..

hoping to get down there on the last night and also try the Stockwell, which rumour has it is open (ye gods!)

I think profits will be ploughed back into the castle refurb.

Stockwell is open. Will be having a look later.
